Statement of Henry M. Paulson, Jr. on Virtual Summit Between Presidents Biden and Xi

Yesterday’s virtual summit between US President Biden and Chinese President Xi is an important step in establishing a new framework for US-China relations.

There are significant issues that need to be addressed from pandemic cooperation, restimulating global growth, and climate change.

I urge the two leaders to continue to find ways to work together. Last week’s commitment to cooperate on climate change is an important step in the right direction.

While one meeting can’t fix all the issues we face, the world will be a dangerous place if the two largest economies are not able to find ways to work together, as well as handle competition.

—Henry M. Paulson, Jr., Chairman of the Paulson Institute and former US Treasury Secretary
