Christina Jenq, one of the Paulson Institute’s 2012 predoctoral fellows, provided a fieldwork report on her Ph.D. dissertation, “The Effects of Gender-Biased Labor Demand on Local Wages and Labor Supply in Urban China.” Jenq, a Ph.D. candidate in economics, is constructing a proxy for gender-biased regional labor demand over the period 1990-2005 and examines its effect on high skill and low skill wages and labor supply by gender of nonmigrant urban residents in China. Jenq’s talk sought to interpret her results in light of labor market competition from low-skill migrants, and discussed the implications for understanding wage elasticities of labor supply.
